Bethesda North Expansion
We've Increased Our Capacity to Care
Bethesda North’s $150 million expansion project is nearly complete. By late fall, the expansion’s seven-story patient care tower will be fully open and ready to accommodate a more than 40 percent increase in inpatient capacity.
Most floors of the new tower already are open. This new space includes:
- 300,000 square feet of new patient care and support space
- Seven-story patient care tower
- 127 private rooms; nine of these rooms can be converted to a critical care unit as demand grows
- On-site MRI facility
- New critical care unit with 32 beds
- Eight additional postpartum beds in Maternity
- Two-story parking structure
- Relocated helipad closer to Emergency Department, away from area homes
- Expansion/relocation of Logistics, Biomedical Engineering and Cafeteria
With an eye towards safety and quality, the expansion includes these special amenities:
127 additional patient rooms
The new tower brings 127 additional patient rooms to the hospital campus. All rooms are private. The increased capacity means improved service for patients:
- Quicker direct admission to the hospital by their physician,
- Improved patient flow and less waiting in the Emergency Department
Improved patient services
The expansion provides:
- On-site MRI facility
- Relocated helipad, closer to the Emergency Department
- Expanded parking
- Additional rooms for postpartum patients
- Expanded and relocated Cafeteria
Family-centered amenities
New patient rooms are private, nearly twice the size of current rooms with:
- Pull-out couches for family members
- DVD and CD players
- Flat-screen TVs
- Internet access
- Multiple lighting options
Most advanced technology available
Every department is equipped with the most up-to-date technology available:
- High-tech beds in Intensive Care speed healing
- Equipment booms in ICU mean a safer environment for patients, family, staff
- Computerized medication pumps safely deliver medicine in precise doses
- Electronic verification of patient's medication improves patient safety at the bedside
- More computers provide instant bedside access to patient records
- Bladder scanners reduce catheterizations, improve patient comfort
- Da Vinci Surgical Robot provides less invasive surgery, faster healing
- Human Patient Simulator provides true-to-life scenarios for training
- Ability to digitally store diagnostic images such as X-rays speeds access for physicians
Once the new tower is completely open, and renovations in other areas are complete, Bethesda North will be staffed with 250 more caregivers and support staff. They, together with current staff and physicians, will deliver the safest, highest quality, most compassionate care available to our community.
